The Zoo Duisburg is one of Germany's most well-known zoological gardens. It is situated in close proximity to the motorway A 3, which divides the zoo's terrain of ca. 15 hectare into a western and an eastern part. The zoo's high level of awareness is due last but not least to the RWE-Dolphinarium and the koala bears rearing.

Apart from the RWE-Dolphinarium and the koala house the zoo offers its visitors numerous attractions. The Fossa-facility, the Equatorium, the Chinese garden and the tropical house 'Rio Negro' to name but a few. For people who want to get involved with animals the zoo offers animal sponsorships. School classes have the option to visit the zoo school and learn beyond biology lessons from close encounters with animals.

The zoo was founded as an animal park in 1934 and carries the description 'zoo' since 1970. the visitor numbers are ca. 1 million per year. The zoo attracts also visitors from The Netherlands through diverse special events (night safaris, getting married at the zoo, children's birthday parties and so on).
